On a J! 3.3 installation using sh404sef and have K2 categories menu type for the default home page

The url for the default homepage menu item is not the domain root. I can access the domain root and everything is as it should be. When I click on the menu item for the home page it goes to a url that includes the category in the url.

for instance:

The K2 category of the default homepage is called howtos. When I go to example.com I see the category view, as I expect. When I click on the 'home' menu item, it goes to example.com/howtos with the same category view

Any ideas appriciated, thanks!

After seeing a few threads about a similar problem caused by multiple languages, I switched the site language from English (US) to English (UK) and the problem went away.

I'll update this post if/when I find a way to have the site language set as US
